This multi-sited project as part of the larger DFG-funded research project “Participative development of rural regions”, addresses the question, how, in the context of participative development measures for rural regions, spaces of nature are discursively and materially constructed, and how perceptions held by participants, and practices related to those spaces, are transformed and conversely transform those spaces. The measures under consideration aim to integrate practically lived conservation into the domain of everyday life. Firstly, the ideas, concepts and representations of nature (e.g. as ecosystem, living environment, landscape) employed and their practical use in engendering a problematization of nature (e.g. the loss of biodiversity) will be analyzed. Secondly, but in the same analytical frame, the material practices, geared towards the transformation of those spaces of nature, will be considered. Lefebvre’s ideas about the production of space will serve as sensitizing concepts in this regard. It will be shown, that those material-semiotic constructions produce hybrid formations of socionatures, which are continually reworked in the place-specific fabric of human and non-human agents, yet, whose relations of production extend well beyond the immediate locality. Empirically, the research project draws on extended ethnographic as well as discourse analytical data, while theoretically it is located in the Anthropology of Policy, the Anthropology of Nature & Environment as well as in Rural Geography.
